Humanist weddings and partnership celebrations

If you wish to have a non-religious wedding (civil wedding or civil partnership), you are legally required, in England and Wales, to have a ceremony in a registry office or approved venue.

However, many couples want something more to celebrate this treasured moment: you might want a more personal, meaningful location; or an unconventional format; or longer, specially-written vows and declarations of love.

Couples who choose Humanist weddings usually complete the legal formalities of the civil wedding at a Registry Office, but consider the Humanist ceremony to be their real wedding, where they publicly express their commitment to each other.

Humanist Celebrants are experienced in conducting non-religious weddings and can help make it a truly memorable occasion. They can assist the couple with choosing readings and music and planning the format of the ceremony. They will work with the couple in detail, and rehearse the ceremony with them, to ensure every detail is just right.

Gay-affirmation ceremonies or civil partnerships

We consider gay-affirmation ceremonies, known as ‘civil partnerships’, to be the same as weddings and marriages, whereby the love and long term commitment shared by people of the same sex can be openly declared and publicly celebrated.

Re-affirmation ceremonies

These are often chosen by couples who want to mark an important anniversary with a ceremony that publicly declares their commitment to each other and in which they re-state their vows.
